About Clifton Hill House

A little information on the hall and what to expect.

Clifton Hill House is a mixed Hall of Residence for 230 students. 35 students are 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th year students known as “Returners”. It is the only catered Hall in the Clifton area, all areas of CHH are non-smoking, and it is within easy walking distance to the academic departments. There is also a resident staff of Warden, Deputy Warden, Senior Tutor and five other tutors and Hall Bursar/Tutor. There is a non-resident staff of Caterer, Accommodation Manager, Executive Assistant/Warden’s Secretary, Cleaning, Catering, Maintenance and Reception Staff.

The Hall has four distinct areas –
Old Clifton, Callander, Fry Wing and South Wing.

Old Clifton and Callander are female only areas, all the bedrooms are individual but do not have washbasins. Fry Wing is the largest block; it has 112 bedrooms, and although they do not have washbasins, they are of a good size. South Wing has 72 bedrooms, all have washbasins, but they are slightly smaller than Fry Wing bedrooms.

In all areas there are communal bathrooms and well appointed kitchen facilities. In addition to this the Hall has a Television Room, a Computer Room, a Junior Common Room and Bar, a large Dining Room and an elegant Function Suite. The Function Suite includes the Fisher Drawing Room and the Symonds Music Room with a baby-grand piano, where students are welcome to practise their musical instruments. The whole suite is frequently hired out for day functions and weddings, but when free, students are also welcome to utilise these rooms for quiet studying. The Symonds Library also offers a quiet area for students to study. There are Squash and Tennis courts on site.
